Tunis Hotel Stereo Compilation Brings Tunisia’s Hidden Sound Archive Back to Life
The Tunis Hotel Stereo Compilation is finally here after years of research, digging, and real encounters with the people behind the music. This release does more than collect tracks. It brings back a forgotten moment in Tunisian sound, when artists explored new genres while staying deeply connected to their roots.
Curated by Cheb Mimo, the compilation gathers nine rare recordings. Each one reflects a time when musicians saw no contradiction between heritage and modernity. They experimented freely with reggae, rock, and disco. At the same time, they kept a strong Tunisian identity in their music. That balance defines the spirit of the project.
The team spent years tracking down records, meeting artists, and speaking with their families. They collected stories, memories, and details that give each track real depth. This work turns the compilation into more than a listening experience. It becomes a living archive shaped by people, not just sounds.
Released by Shakshouka Records, the project marks an important shift. It stands as the first compilation of Tunisian music curated locally by Tunisians. That detail matters. It allows the story to stay in its own context, without being filtered from the outside.

The release also comes with strong artistic direction. Mehdi Ben Yahiya and Cheb Mimo wrote detailed liner notes that guide listeners through the history behind each track. Mogli Gligli and Ghimeji created the visual identity, while Frank Merritt handled the mastering at The Carvery Studio. Every part of the project shows careful attention and respect for the material.
The compilation also honors the artists who shaped this sound. Names like Jomaa Bouzrara, Sadok Gharbi, Hechmi Meliani, and Hamadi Mahjoubi represent a generation that pushed boundaries. Their music moved between styles without losing its identity. Contributions from families, including Yassine Zalila and Mehdi Mellef, add another layer of continuity and care.
At its core, the Tunis Hotel Stereo Compilation shows that Tunisian music has always been open, curious, and evolving. It does not freeze tradition. It expands it. This release reconnects past creativity with today’s listeners and reminds us that many stories are still waiting to be heard.
