Preserving Tunisia’s Independence Memory

Khaled Abid, director of the Higher Institute of Contemporary History of Tunisia, has called for greater efforts to preserve the country’s historical documents. Speaking to Mosaique today, he highlighted the importance of documenting Tunisia’s struggle for independence.
Abid made these remarks at the conclusion of an international conference organised by the institute. The event coincided with the 70th anniversary of Tunisia’s independence. It brought together Tunisian and international researchers to discuss the national movement before independence and the country’s path to liberation.
The conference also examined the struggles that shaped Tunisia’s national identity. By bringing researchers together, the institute aimed to enrich discussions on this important period in the country’s history.
Since its founding, the institute has worked to collect documents related to Tunisia’s contemporary history. According to Abid, it has already brought around one tonne of historical documents from France. However, the institute continues to seek additional material to expand its archives.
These documents remain valuable regardless of their authors’ nationality. In particular, records written by French and other European historians can help researchers understand key periods in Tunisia’s past. They also offer additional perspectives on the country’s road to independence.
Abid stressed that bringing more documents to Tunisia requires the support of public authorities. He called on the relevant institutions to work together and help the institute continue its mission.
Ultimately, the goal is to preserve Tunisia’s collective memory of the struggle for liberation. By collecting and safeguarding historical records, the institute seeks to support future research and ensure that these documents remain accessible for generations to come.
