In Testour, Tunisia’s 35th Heritage Month officially opened a nationwide celebration running from April 18 to May 18. Organized by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, this year’s edition focuses on architectural heritage. In particular, the programme highlights the importance of preserving and passing on Tunisia’s built heritage.

Testour offers a fitting setting for the opening. Indeed, the town is one of Tunisia’s most distinctive centres of Andalusian heritage. Its architecture reflects centuries of history, cultural exchange and shared memory. Today, traditional street layouts, distinctive façades and historic landmarks continue to shape its identity.

As part of this year’s programme, The Andalusian Route aims to showcase the town’s heritage and connect it with contemporary audiences. Meanwhile, visitors and participants from surrounding regions gathered in Testour for the launch. Through exhibitions, artistic performances and public events, the programme encouraged discussions about the role of heritage in modern society.

The opening ceremony welcomed Amina Srarfi, alongside regional representatives and figures from the cultural sector. Their presence, in turn, highlighted the importance of heritage preservation at the national level. Furthermore, it reflected the potential of cultural heritage to support tourism and local development.

Alongside the ceremony, the programme included discussions and conferences at the Andalusian Café. Experts and officials examined architectural techniques through the experience of Testour. Among the speakers, Faouzia Ben Zahra presented an overview of ongoing restoration projects. Her contribution also highlighted the progress and challenges involved in maintaining historic monuments.

Beyond the opening ceremony, the event reflects a broader ambition. Heritage Month seeks to raise public awareness about preservation while encouraging new ways to engage with the past. In this context, The Andalusian Route offers more than a cultural itinerary. Instead, it creates opportunities for people to experience, understand and sustain their heritage.

As celebrations continue across Tunisia, Testour sets the tone for a month dedicated to the country’s architectural and cultural legacy. More importantly, the programme encourages people to look beyond historic buildings as physical remains. Ultimately, it presents heritage as a living part of Tunisian identity, connecting generations through shared places, traditions and memories.
