Djerba Set to Shine as a Global Cinema Hub in 2025

By Tunez Magazine ·

From October 25 to 28, the island of Djerba will welcome the world of cinema for the 25th edition of the Medenine International Film Festival. What began as a modest cultural gathering has grown into a major cinematic event in the region, attracting filmmakers, producers, and cinephiles from more than 25 countries.

This year’s edition offers a diverse program of film screenings, cultural exchanges, workshops, and artistic showcases. These activities reflect the festival’s central philosophy: cinema as a meeting point for cultures, generations, and creative visions.

One of the highlights is the unveiling of the official poster, designed by Abdelallah Chaibi. According to festival director Mohamed Thabet, the poster is more than an image. It is a visual manifesto. At its center stands a radiant woman dressed in flowing attire, gazing upward as a symbol of tradition and renewal. Her movement recalls both a blooming flower and the opening of a camera lens, suggesting discovery and exploration. Through this imagery, the design celebrates diversity, contemporary creativity, and cinema’s ability to connect the past with the future.

The festival also aims to bring cinema beyond traditional screening venues and into local communities. African cinema will receive special attention, with participants from more than ten countries across the continent. Children’s cinema will also play an important role through neighborhood screenings, mobile cinemas, and programs designed for young audiences. Training workshops in youth and cultural centers will provide opportunities for emerging filmmakers and storytellers to develop their skills.

This year, the festival will extend its activities across southern Tunisia. Screenings and events will take place in Medenine, Djerba, and surrounding areas, making cinema accessible to a wider audience. This decentralized approach reflects the festival’s commitment to bringing the seventh art closer to local communities while sharing Tunisia’s cultural vitality with the world.

Beyond its screenings, the Medenine International Film Festival offers a space for encounters and exchanges. With its rich heritage and tradition of hospitality, Djerba provides a fitting setting for filmmakers and visitors. The festival celebrates not only cinematic talent but also human connection and the universal language of images.

As it marks its 25th edition, the festival seeks to strengthen Tunisia’s place on the international cultural scene. Through cinema, it brings together diverse perspectives, encourages new creative voices, and celebrates the stories that connect us across borders.
