La7ir Ya3ich: A Tunisian Re-Dub of Lascars

La7ir Ya3ich is a Tunisian re-dubbing project based on the French animated series Lascars. The original visuals remain unchanged, but the dialogue has been re-recorded in Tunisian Arabic. Colloquial expressions, local jokes, and cultural references replace the original French dialogue.

Khaled Bougatfa initiated the project. Known for his work in audiovisual production and voice work, he collaborated with performers and artists to reshape the series for a Tunisian audience. Publicly available information about the full cast and writing team remains limited. The project circulated online in the early 2010s, although its exact release date has not been documented.

Keeping the Animation, Changing the Dialogue

The original Lascars series emerged in France in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It became known for its fast-paced animation, urban settings, and streetwise characters. Its stories draw on the experiences of multicultural Parisian neighbourhoods.

In La7ir Ya3ich, the animation and character designs remain intact. The original episode structure is also preserved. The main transformation happens through the dialogue.

Rather than simply translating the French scripts, the creators introduced new dialogue in Tunisian Arabic. The characters speak with expressions and humour familiar to Tunisian audiences. References to neighbourhoods such as Bab El Khadhra, La Goulette, and Sidi Hassine help evoke local urban life.

The result is a distinctly Tunisian interpretation of the original series. Its humour draws on everyday conversations, street slang, family relationships, and informal economies. These references give the characters a familiar voice without changing their appearance or animation.

An Unofficial Adaptation

La7ir Ya3ich is an independent re-dubbing project. It is not known to be officially affiliated with or authorised by the creators or distributors of Lascars.

Unlike conventional television adaptations, the project circulated informally online. Episodes and clips have been shared through social media and messaging platforms. Its distribution relies largely on users sharing content rather than on an official release campaign.

This approach places La7ir Ya3ich within a broader tradition of grassroots media reinterpretation. Across different countries, creators have reworked existing films, television programmes, and animation through local languages and cultural references. In doing so, they give familiar material a new meaning for different audiences.

Language, Identity, and Cultural Context

The use of Tunisian Arabic is central to the project’s identity. Often called Tounsi, the language reflects everyday speech and varies across regions and social groups. Although it dominates informal conversation, Tunisian Arabic has historically had a more limited presence in certain formal media contexts, where French and Modern Standard Arabic are also widely used.

By placing Tounsi at the centre of the dialogue, La7ir Ya3ich makes local speech its main creative tool. Slang, rhythm, and familiar expressions shape the characters and their interactions. The humour depends not only on what the characters say, but also on how they say it.

The project therefore goes beyond a conventional translation. It brings a French animated series into a Tunisian linguistic and cultural context. The original characters remain visually French, yet their voices evoke a different social environment.

This contrast creates a hybrid work that sits between parody, localisation, and cultural reinterpretation. The familiar animation provides the framework, while the new dialogue transforms the audience’s understanding of the characters.

Online Distribution and Reception

The project’s informal circulation makes its reach difficult to measure. No verified public viewing figures, licensing records, or official promotional statistics are readily available. Clips have circulated through social media, comedy pages, and private messaging groups.

Documentation about the production is also limited. Khaled Bougatfa is associated with the project, but a complete public list of voice performers and scriptwriters has not been established in the available information.

This lack of formal documentation makes it difficult to reconstruct the project’s production history. Nevertheless, its circulation illustrates how audiences can encounter and share locally reinterpreted versions of international media outside traditional distribution channels.

For viewers familiar with both Lascars and Tunisian street culture, the re-dub offers a different way to experience the original animation. Its appeal lies in the contrast between recognisable visuals and dialogue shaped by local expressions and humour.

Media Remix and Local Production

La7ir Ya3ich can be understood as an example of media remixing. This practice involves reworking existing cultural material to create new meanings, often through changes in language, context, or presentation.

In Tunisia, such projects demonstrate how creators can reinterpret international content using familiar forms of speech and humour. They also highlight the creative possibilities of accessible digital production tools.

Re-dubbing requires more than replacing one language with another. It involves adapting dialogue, timing, delivery, and cultural references to fit the existing animation. When successful, these changes can transform the way audiences understand familiar characters and situations.

La7ir Ya3ich offers an example of this process. By keeping the original animation while reshaping its dialogue in Tunisian Arabic, the project turns an existing French series into a locally recognisable cultural product. Its history also raises questions about informal creativity, online circulation, authorship, and the relationship between global media and local identity.
