The Arab music world has lost one of its most influential innovators. Hany Shenouda, the celebrated Egyptian composer, producer, arranger and founder of Al Massrieen, has died at the age of 82. His work transformed Egyptian popular music and introduced a modern sound that continues to influence artists across the Middle East and North Africa.

Born in Tanta, Egypt, in 1943, Shenouda developed a passion for music at an early age. He later studied at the Faculty of Music Education in Cairo. During the 1960s, he performed with several bands, including Les Petits Chats, one of Egypt’s pioneering rock and pop groups. As Western musical influences reached a growing Egyptian audience, Shenouda explored ways to combine contemporary sounds with Arabic musical traditions.

One important moment in his early career involved legendary singer Abdel Halim Hafez. Hafez invited Shenouda to assemble a new orchestra for his live performances. However, the project never came to fruition following the singer’s death in 1977. Shenouda continued to develop his musical ideas and soon embarked on a project of his own.

In 1977, he founded Al Massrieen, a group that would become a landmark in Egyptian popular music. Working with lyricist Omar Batiek, Shenouda created a distinctive sound that blended disco, funk, jazz, rock and pop. The group also introduced socially conscious Arabic lyrics, setting it apart from many contemporary acts.

Albums such as Bent El Soltan, Mabahes El Kahraba and Hanzaker became important works in the band’s catalogue. Their musical arrangements and contemporary production helped establish Al Massrieen as one of the most distinctive groups in Egypt’s music history. Decades later, their recordings continue to attract listeners.

Shenouda’s influence extended far beyond his own band. As a composer, arranger and producer, he contributed to the careers of several prominent Egyptian artists. His collaborations included Mohamed Mounir, Amr Diab, Ali El Haggar, Mohamed El Helw, Simone, Mona Abdel Ghani and Anoushka.

Through these collaborations, Shenouda helped bring new arrangements, instrumentation and studio techniques into Egyptian popular music. His work shaped the sound of the 1970s and 1980s while opening new possibilities for later generations of musicians.

Hany Shenouda leaves behind a musical legacy that reaches beyond individual songs and albums. Through Al Massrieen and his work with other artists, he helped redefine the relationship between Arabic music and international pop influences. His contributions remain an important part of Egypt’s modern musical history.

What distinguished Hany Shenouda was his willingness to keep exploring new musical ideas. He embraced new technologies, changing tastes and younger audiences throughout his career. As his recordings reached listeners through streaming platforms and vinyl reissues, a new generation discovered his work. He also remained active on social media, gave interviews and worked with emerging musicians.

His influence gradually extended beyond Egypt. Music collectors, DJs and record labels rediscovered Al Massrieen’s recordings, bringing the group’s music to international audiences. This renewed interest also highlighted Shenouda’s contribution to the development of modern Arab pop.

Hany Shenouda’s death marks the end of a significant chapter in Egyptian music history. However, his work continues to reach new audiences. His recordings preserve his distinctive approach to musical arrangement, while his collaborations reflect his influence on generations of Egyptian artists. Through Al Massrieen and his wider body of work, Shenouda helped expand the possibilities of Arabic popular music. His legacy remains part of Egypt’s musical heritage and continues to attract listeners around the world.
