Heritage Month Opens in Testour

In Testour, the 35th edition of Heritage Month was officially launched, opening a nationwide celebration that runs each year from April 18 to May 18. Organized by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Tunisia, this year’s edition is held under the theme of architectural heritage, placing a strong emphasis on the preservation and transmission of Tunisia’s built legacy.

The choice of Testour for the opening is far from symbolic. Known as one of the country’s most emblematic centers of Andalusian heritage, the town reflects a unique blend of history, architecture, and cultural memory. Its urban fabric, marked by distinctive facades, traditional layouts, and historic landmarks, stands as a testament to centuries of Andalusian influence that continue to shape local identity.

At the heart of this year’s launch is The Andalusian Route, a cultural initiative designed to highlight this heritage while connecting it to contemporary audiences. The event drew visitors and participants from surrounding regions, transforming the city into a meeting point where history and present day cultural expression intersect. Through exhibitions, artistic performances, and public gatherings, the program invites a broader reflection on the role of heritage in modern society.

The opening ceremony was attended by Amina Srarfi, alongside regional representatives and key figures from the cultural sector. Their presence underscored the importance of heritage as a national priority, not only in terms of preservation but also as a driver for cultural tourism and local development.

A series of discussions and conferences were also held, notably at the Andalusian Café, where experts and officials explored the theme of architectural techniques through the lens of Testour’s experience. Among the key contributions, Faouzia Ben Zahra presented an overview of restoration efforts currently underway, shedding light on the challenges and progress involved in maintaining historic monuments.

Beyond its ceremonial dimension, the event reflects a broader vision. By placing architectural heritage at the center of public discourse, Heritage Month aims to reinforce awareness around the value of preservation while encouraging new forms of engagement with the past. In this context, The Andalusian Route emerges not only as a cultural itinerary but as a living framework through which heritage can be experienced, understood, and sustained.
