Preserving Tunisia’s Independence Memory
The Director of the Higher Institute of Contemporary History of Tunisia, Khaled Abid, said in a statement to Mosaique today, on the sidelines of the conclusion of the international conference organized by the institute to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Tunisia’s independence, that the institute was keen to involve a large number of Tunisian and foreign researchers to enrich the forum’s discussions on the history of the national movement before independence and the process of liberating the country, highlighting what the Tunisian people endured to achieve their national identity.
Abid emphasized that since its founding, the institute has been committed to collecting all documents that chronicle the contemporary history of Tunisia. It has managed to bring around one ton of documents from France and continues to seek more documents, even if they were written by French or European historians, because they cover an important period in the country’s history.
Khaled Abid added: “Bringing these documents depends on the efforts of the authorities, and we hope they exert themselves in this regard, with all institutions joining forces to support the institute’s work in continuing to document the collective memory of Tunisia’s liberation period.”
